What is Hesitation

The rule is basically you are allowed to hesitate for as long as you like (within reasonable time limits for the game).
The downside of " a pause for thought" is that if your partner makes a bid, the police can be called and their hand evaluated on whether they have their bid.

Here lies the problem. What some players would bid on a hand is considerably different to what others may bid. Typically the rule is that if 75% of their peers (players of approximately the same level) would have made that bid then the bid is acceptable.
If not then it is rejected.

So on the hands that you had, would you consider the actions to be 75%?

Also note that after a 'pause for thought' a player may not necessarily be able to choose from 'Logical Alternatives' depending on the actual situation.

Here is a clear cut case where the score was adjusted back against a pair .

South West North East
- 1 Pass 2NT

Pass 3 Pass 3

Pass 3 Pass 4NT

Pass 5 Pass 5NT

Pass 6 Pass 6

Pass 7 Pass Pass

Pass

Now after the 6 bid there was a long pause for thought before 6. It is clear to the 6 bidder that there can be only one thing that their partner is considering and that is 7. So now it can be construed that 6 bidder may have been influenced to determine if they have anything 'extra'. However since there was a pause they do not get to choose the logical alternative of 7. Is 6 a logical alternative? The answer is yes, so they are can only bid 6. When the player was asked about the auction they said they were going to bid 7 anyway, in this case then the bidding must proceed 5[N] P 7. There is no point in answering if you are going to bid 7. So this is a clear case where the player can never choose to bid 7 when it is right. If they do bid 7 all they do now is get to play in 7 for the score of 6. If 7 goes down they get to keep the full -100.
